Post 2 - MicroStrategy Express


Which Attributes and Metrics did we use?

For each of the 5 questions we ended up using the same as the proposed ones in the first blog post except we have altered question 2 and 3:

Why did you choose the kind of Visualization you used for each of your Questions?

During which weather condition brought in the largest slot payout amount? – We decided that using a bar graph would be most efficient because it’s a lot easier to compare the data in this form of visual representation. With bar graphs it easy to determine which slot payout amount was the highest. Bar graphs are generally known to be used when displaying a large of set of data to be compared, which is why we determined it would be most useful.

Which quarter had the least amount of coins in? – For this question we decided that implementing a pie chart would be most effective. Pie charts are useful when trying to compare percentages of a complete set of a data. We also took into consideration that since there would only be 3 sets of data to compare, it would be ideal to use a pie chart. Using this chart makes the comparison a lot easier since it is extremely easy to identify the lowest amount by simply checking which portion of the pie graph is the smallest. The quantitative nature of pie charts is mainly what led us to select this form of graphic representation.

What top 10 slot machine games have the highest jackpot? – We chose to use a bar graph once again since there is a large number of data being compared. The MicroStrategy Express program also allows you to limit the amount of results in a set of data to a high or low rank. Since much of the data fell at around a similar level, it was easy to view which data ranked at the top 10. The result 2 bars are clearly higher than the other 8. The remaining 8 slot machine games showed that the input amount of coins was around the same. By limiting the results to 10 it was then easy to identify the slight variations in the remaining 8 slots.

In what slot location of the casino has the highest slot win? – We chose a bubble graph for this question because it is most efficient in identifying the maximum points. In the MicroStrategy program particularly, when highlighting a certain point with the cursor it displays the exact maximum amount. This is very useful for identifying exact maximum points in a data set as opposed to using approximate numbers which are generally used in bar graphs and line graphs.

What are the top 20 games with the lowest slot win? - For this question we decided to use a bar graph again, because this question was representing quite a large amount of data. By choosing this particular graph we are able to see the top 20 games that have the lowest slot win. The metrics used in this data were all of the casino's slot wins, which is in the form of dollar amounts which can be quite extensive. The bar graph allows us to see all of the information clearly and be able to understand.

What conclusion(s) and insight(s) can you draw from the visualization for each of your questions? 

During which weather condition brought in the largest slot payout amount? - The bar graph allows us to be able to see that when the weather condition is raining lightly the slot payout amount is over $146,000,000, which is the highest. When the weather condition is cloudy the slot payout amount is only about $45,000,000, which is the lowest. The conclusions we can draw from this visualization is that individuals are more likely to spend the majorty of their day in the casino when it is raining in hopes to win money. When someone is using the slot machines it is not an immediate win, it takes a long time in order for a customer to have a return on their money. Therefore when the weather is raining outside people are willing to spend more of their time at a slot machine, which would result in more slot payout amounts.

Which quarter had the least amount of coins in? - In this pie graph it reveals that the quarter that had the least amount of coin ins was the first quarter with more than $37,000,000. Whereas the quarter that had the most amount of coin ins was quarter 3 with over $265,000,000. The conclusions that we can make from this pie graph is that during the first quarter there were were not a lot of individuals that were using the slot machines and therefore did not have a large amount. This might be because of the season or prices have increased for the slot machines and people do not want to play them. This also might be the cause of people wanting to try different games at the casino instead of slot machines.  

What top 10 slot machine games have the highest jackpot? - Conclusions that we can gain from this bar graph shows us which games are being used the most by individuals. The games Double Diamond and Cleopatra are both games with the highest amount of jackpot with both with over $800,000 which over exceeds any other game at the casino. We can see that individuals enjoy these two games because they are willing to spend more of their money playing these slot machines in hopes that they will win money. The casino might want to implement more of these slot machine games in the casino in order to attract more people to them, and allow many more people to play these games and therefore have people spending more of their money.   
     

In what slot location of the casino has the highest slot win? - We can see from this bubble graph that in the location West A of the casino is where the most amount of slot wins are occurring, with over $3,000,000. We can conclude from this information that people may be spending a much larger amount of time in that specific area. Possibly because some of the more popular games are located in that area or are easier to handle and therefore people are more drawn to that location and wanted to spend more time there. It also might be close to the casino bar, or other necessities that individuals find comforting. In order to lower the slot wins, the casino may want to spread out the machines in that location so they are not giving out so much money to individuals.        

What are the top 20 games with the lowest slot win? - We can conclude from this graph that the lowest slot wins include slot machine games such as Sizzling 7's with over $380,000, Triple Five Times Pay TM with over $400,000. Some insights we can make from this graph is that these games may possibly be much harder to play or undesirable to individuals so that may be why the slot win is so low. For these 20 games it also may advertise a low slot win so individuals are not interested in spending the time to win the money.

Post 1 - Dashboards

 
What is a Dashboard?

A dashboard is a tool that is used to combine and arrange numbers, referred to as metrics and information, referred to as attributes. For example in a dashboard that has dataset from a movie theater, we would consider the names of movies they show there to be attributes and the amount of ticket sales for each movie to be metrics. These metrics and attributes are then organized in a graphical layout.

What is the Role of Dashboards in Business Intelligence?

In a business intelligence program it allows the user to view their dashboard in a unique way by using visualizations such as a variety of graphs. This makes it easier for the user to analyze the metrics and therefore make decisions based on the results.


How can Dashboards Help with Big Data?

On a day to day basis organizations have to handle an increasing amount of data, such as sales and inventory and can become complex to analyze. Dashboards help organize all of the metrics and attributes into a simplified forms like rows and columns so individuals in the organization can understand the information clearly. In a dashboard you can also filter the information by ranking it from highest to lowest and vice versa. You can also rank by highest or lowest percent. All of these filters help to narrow the data to make findings much easier.


How are Dashboards Useful in a Business?

Dashboards are useful in a business because they are able to make data easy to analyze and it allows the organization to understand and see their company in different persepectives. Therefore organizations are able to make improvements in  certain areas. Therefore it helps in creating a more effective and efficient business.

What Does our Dataset Represent? 

The enterprise our dataset represents is a Casino. The activity that our dataset displays is the use of customers gambling on slot machines.
